A symposium led by students on the Contemporary Art Practice (CAP) MA at the RCA seeking new possibilities for art in or beyond the market. This event is part of the 2024 CAP Festival.

Join the RCA Contemporary Art Practice MA and Chelsea MAFA postgraduates in a student-led, dynamic symposium exploring the topics of art, commodification, capitalism and valuation through their practice and research. Departing from traditional formats, presentations may take various forms including speaking, screenings, performances, and interactive discussions. Amidst the backdrop of record-breaking art auctions and the pervasive culture of consumption, emerging artists face a unique set of challenges and opportunities: How does one navigate the terrain where artistic expression and material costs meet art market forces? What does it mean for art to transcend its role and value as a commodity?

Through the diverse perspectives shared by speakers and attendees, the symposium seeks to question existing notions of art as commodity and imagine new possibilities for art in or beyond the market. Our guest respondents for the event are curator, Linda Rocco and Professor Ian Brown.

As Barbara Kruger provocatively reminds us “I shop therefore I am” and in her current show at the Serpentine Gallery, the artists ask — are we because we sell?
