Custom Executive Education Case Study

Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts (Shanghai University) commissioned the RCA to deliver a customised five-day Design Thinking and Action Research workshop for over 80 MA and PhD students in China, run by Bahbak Hashemi-Nezhad from the RCA Design Products Programme.

The workshop utilised a playful and informed research approach and was structured into four phases: field work, brief development, design responses, design scenario building and performance presentations. As one of the world’s most populated cities, the programme of activities was informed by the physical and social fabric of Shanghai.

Participants were organised into teams and encouraged to look at the city where they live and study afresh, in order to reflect critically upon it and develop human-centred design responses. The workshops gave participants the opportunity to experience the RCA’s unique ethos and approach to teaching.

After the workshop, a booklet was produced to present the design outcomes and document the cultural exchange. The model has proved very successful and the RCA is delivering more executive education courses at the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts in 2018/19.

"The course has built a learning platform for students to absorb advanced international knowledge while taking root in Shanghai culture." Ling Min
