EBU Academy, European Broadcasting Union
Since March 2017, the RCA has delivered two Design Thinking Masterclasses annually for the EBU Academy, which is the training centre for the European Broadcasting Union, the world’s leading alliance of public service media.
Professor Jeremy Myerson, Helen Hamlyn Chair of Design at the RCA, introduces the methodology and tools of design thinking through short talks and case studies showing the best examples of disruption in the media sector. Participants are shown that through design thinking they can define, visualise, prototype and test new ideas. For the second part of the course participants work in teams to develop and present their own proposals.
The course is collaborative and content is tailored to meet the specific needs of industry. In addition to the course, in October 2017 Jeremy delivered a keynote about the power of design thinking at the 18th EBU Academy Assembly on Innovation to Drive Digital Transformation of Public-sector Media.
The RCA has provided training for participants from national broadcasters including RTBF and VRT (Belgium), Czech Radio (Czechoslovakia), DR (Denmark), Deutsche Welle and ZDF (Germany), Sveriges Radio (Sweden), PBS (Malta), RAI (Italy), SRF (Swizterland) and DUNA (Hungary). Nathalie Labourdelle, Head of EBU Academy, said: ‘The RCA bears not only the tradition, but also delivers on excellence with its courses. When we are here we can feel a great atmosphere of creativity and art… The value is to meet great professors and learn from the great UK experiences and case studies.’ Josef El Mahdi, Project Manager/Editor at Sveriges Radio, noted: ‘The masterclass gave me new tools to tackle complex tasks, using the design process as a means of generating ideas and visualising creative solutions. I can highly recommend the EBU and the RCA!’
