Design for our Future Selves Awards 2008
The eight awards presented in 2008 were:

Big Idea Award for Inclusive Communication

- Ali Hodgson, RCA Communication Art & Design (Winner)
‘Endgame’ explores how social challenges produced by climate change can be visually communicated. The project has resulted in the design of educational tools and awareness ‘games’ at individual and community levels. 

CABE Award for Inclusive Environment

A series of interactive devices that explore how to foster closer interaction between patients and their 'life support' machines.

Factory Design Award for Inclusive Design Process

GMW Architects Award for Sustainable Community

- Reginald Hingston, RCA Vehicle Design (Winner)
Lamrana is a ferry designed to travel between the 13 coastal cities of Sierra Leone, West Africa, for use by local communities using local knowledge and resources, including materials, engineering, crafts and marine information.

Help The Aged Award for Independent Living

Breathe Easy
- Paul Thomas, RCA Industrial Design Engineering
This project was inspired by NASA research on toxin absorbing plants, and looks at designing a device that will bring greenery into the bedroom and help people sleep better. The device stimulates and nurtures these plants, which in turn enhance health.

Michael Peters Awards for Interdisciplinary Collaboration

Maternity Necklace

Maternity Necklace is a textured silicone nursery necklace for enjoying breastfeeding in public.

Commuter Thrival

ith Anja Schaffner and Valerio Dilucente: Communication Art & Design (Joint Winner)
A communication campaign that aims to raise awareness of the issues surrounding public transport through a series of posters visualising people's emotions with custom-made costumes.

Helen Hamlyn Award for Creativity


- Maja Ganszyniec, RCA Design Products
BagooTM combines the functions of a baby carrier, bag and blanket. It changes into a bag for family events as well as providing privacy for intimate interaction, and offers carers of babies the independence and confidence for child safety on the move.

Tactile Drive
- Alon Meron, RCA Design Products
This project delivers a series of product designs at various scales and in material combinations – it aims to encourage more interaction between people and their objects.

- Yusuf Muhammad, RCA, Industrial Design Engineering
A device that enables people to see what they have typed on a keyboard without having to look up at the screen. 

Print for Definition
- Lydia Doughty, RCA Printed Textiles
Print for Definition is a printed textile design study that aims to create prints on clothing with accent points that emphasise and define the areas of clothing that women are happy to draw attention to, whilst making areas they feel most insecure about less noticeable.

Snowdon Award for Disability Projects

- Panic Escape
Jeung Woo Choi, Yusuf Muhammad, Paul Thomas (Winners)
Panic Escape responds to the decision by risk experts to remove fire extinguishers from tower blocks. It is an automated system for use in kitchens that utilises a water mist and alarm system.
