More about the short courses

Taught by a multidisciplinary staff team from the Curating Contemporary Art MA and Writing MA programmes within the School of Arts & Humanities at the RCA. Invited curators, researchers and writers working at the forefront of the cultural sector will be invited to contribute.

The two new short courses sit alongside the Curating Contemporary Art and Design: Theory and Practice summer course established in 2016, with applications for 3–14 July 2023 opening from December 2022.

RCA short courses attract a global mix of critical thinkers, creative practitioners, curators, artists and writers from over 60 countries. We provide unparalleled access to teaching, researchers, leading professionals, resources and facilities, as well as opportunities to collaborate and connect with an international network of peers.

They reflect the college’s practice-based learning philosophy with small class sizes; practical group work; independent assignments; rich interaction between students, academics and professionals; enhanced peer-to-peer networking; and a certificate of achievement on completion.

Whether you’re looking for a step-change in your career, transforming your practice with world class thought-leaders, or are considering embarking on one of our MA programmes, the live online Curating Contemporary Art and Design short courses offer a rich insight into the experience of studying at the College. In previous years, short course attendees have gone on to successfully apply to study at the RCA.

Join us at the Royal College of Art this autumn.

“The critical discussion about curatorial practice – including public programming, archival work, publishing, and much more – was robust, and it was great to hear from practitioners working in and out of a wide variety of institutions. I left with a replenished drive to critically consider my own practice, a long reading list, and a set of future correspondents and friends.”

Erin McFadyen, Deputy Editor Artist Profile Curating Contemporary Art and Design: Theory and Practice summer course participant, July 2022

“From taking care of the artefacts and archives, creating the curatorial environments in both online and offline contexts, engaging local communities and audiences over the globe, to all the practical curatorial practices in the industry. This transcultural and trans-geographic platform has created many opportunities for us to reflect on our practices, and experiences and take along to the future contribution in the industry.”

Ronnie Chou, Chief Designer, R'Atelier Interior Design and Styling Curating Contemporary Art and Design: Theory and Practice summer course participant, July 2022

“This is an excellent course which offers students access to practitioners working in the field across a range of diverse practices. I gained a wealth of new knowledge, partly from my fellow students who were sharing experiences from very different cultural locations. The course was extremely well organised and expertly administered. I would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in how new knowledge can emerge from the way that we imagine the relationship between contemporary art and built space.”

Debra Shaw, Reader in Cultural Theory, University of East London Curating Contemporary Art and Design: Theory and Practice summer course participant, July 2022
