Susannah Stark & Karolina Lebek: Unnatural Wealth

27 July 2017 to 7 September 2017 | Visible from the outside 24/7.

StudioRCA | Unit F1, 1 Riverlight Quay, Nine Elms Lane, London SW8 5AU

Part of the Dusk exhibition series curated by A- - -Z at StudioRCA Riverlight.

Susannah Stark and Karolina Lebek present new work exploring empire, spam, property and ecology, culminating in a hybrid installation with sound, moving image, sculpture and live performance, made in and around the Nine Elms development site.

Toxicity, a fusion of industrial processes and nature’s minerals condensed into smooth shiny surfaces. The eternally reflective world of the toxicity, behind which are brittle bones holding things together, arthritic structures beyond repair, running on energy extracted by force from deep earth. We live among them but we are not them.’

The conversation between the artists combines issues personal, economic and spiritual into a rotating narration of the contradictions inherent in contemporary living. The works recast bodies and their corporate environments as mutating virtual projections, hollowed out and reinserted with voices both real and imagined. There is a constant oscillation between two- and three-dimensions, alluding to material instabilities.

The artists use sound and sculpture to bring about a situation where the boundaries of public and private spaces blur and the voices of residents past and present could interface with one another, creating a palpable illusion of space, in the disjunction between CGI/digital visualisation and low-fi effects.

Karolina Lebek lives and works in London. Her practice is an investigation of the phenomenon of the sacred, with a particular interest in object-oriented ontology and animism. Through a desire to capture the effect of memory, Lebek is expressing subtle and perturbing worlds and building her own lexicon of symbolic language which is populated by unspoken narratives, haunting material mysteries and taboo consciousnesses. She graduated in 2016 with an MA in Photography from the Royal College of Art. Selected exhibitions include: Identify your limitations, acknowledge your periphery, Vitrine Gallery, Art Basel June–September 2017; MK Calling, MK Gallery, Milton Keynes, UK, Aprril–May 2017; Uncertain States, Four Corners Gallery, London, 2015; Sensing Grounds, The Horse Hospital, London, 2015 ; Landscapes of Poland, Project Space, MK Gallery, Milton Keynes (solo show, 2012)

Susannah Stark is an artist from Scotland working with print and sound incorporating issues of voice, power and reappropriation; using layered printed architectural objects and 3D animations as carriers for disembodied voices, spoken word and song that aims to question material hierarchies within a wider decolonial framework.
