The new co-leads of Material Engagements Research Cluster (MERC), Dr Katharina Vones and Professor Freddie Robins will present their current material and process focussed research.
Professor Freddie Robins will present her research into the material world and her use of soft materials through an engagement with knitting and knitted objects.
Dr Katharina Vones will examine how her practice as a jewellery artist and researcher focuses on sustainable materialities and how more-than-human temporalities can be used to explore complex living systems and environmental ecologies through digitally informed craft methodologies.
The Material Engagements Research Cluster (MERC) examines diverse forms of material culture, investigating their cultural, social and political narratives of materials and materiality. The research applies practice-led as well as theoretical approaches. Emphasis is placed on critiquing embedded ways of thinking, including the urgent need to respond to sustainable, ethical and ecological issues in the shadow of the contemporary climate crisis; exploring the realms of experience across the material, immaterial and the virtual; unpicking the relationships and interactions between people and things, and more widely experimenting, understanding and gaining new insights into the material world.
The cluster is lead jointly by Dr Katharina Vones (Jewellery & Metal, SoAH), Professor Freddie Robins (Textiles, SoD) and Professor Peter Oakley (SoAH) with members coming from across the college.
