Studying architecture at the RCA
The RCA offers the MArch Architecture, a professional master’s degree which is a key qualification in professional architectural education. Together with professional experience and an accredited practice level qualification, it forms part of the Architects Registration Board (ARB) pathway to registration as an architect in the UK.
Alongside our professional master's, the RCA has developed a new Graduate Diploma in Architecture & Spatial Practice, a one-year, studio-based graduate access programme. Led by senior staff in the School of Architecture, it provides an accelerated route into architectural education for graduates from other disciplines and professional backgrounds, supporting the transfer of existing skills and knowledge into architecture and spatial practice.
Through design projects, workshops, seminars and discussions, we support your intellectual and practical development, helping you identify the best route forward, whether towards professional qualification as an architect or further postgraduate study in related disciplines.
Whatever your background, the RCA's world-leading expertise and interdisciplinary creative environment will support your next steps towards a career in architecture.
Changes to UK architecture education
There are now more ways than ever to become an architect.
Changes to the Architects Registration Board’s (ARB) training framework are opening up exciting new routes into the profession, widening access and bringing new perspectives and backgrounds into architecture. From September 2027, an undergraduate degree in architecture will no longer be a requirement for professional qualification in the UK.
You can still follow the traditional route of an undergraduate architecture degree followed by a professional master’s, but you can also begin in another discipline and move into architecture at postgraduate level. Whatever your background, there is now more than one pathway towards becoming an architect.
This means that:
- UK registration as an architect no longer requires an undergraduate degree in architecture.
- Architecture now becomes accessible to anyone graduating from any degree – our Architecture & Spatial Practice Graduate Diploma provides the first steps into a career as an architect.
- A career change or pivot into architecture is now more accessible; what previously took 7–10 years could now be achieved in around four years.
- It is more accessible to become registered as an architect in the UK as you no longer need a UK undergraduate architecture degree. You can now come into architecture from a non-architecture degree by completing our Graduate Diploma Architecture & Spatial Practice, MArch Architecture and a practice qualification.
- International students can now pursue registration as architects in the UK without needing to transfer or convert their undergraduate qualifications, making the MArch Architecture a more direct route to professional registration.
- Uniquely, due to formal recognised agreements between countries, in some cases, your UK degree is recognised in your home country or once registered as an architect in the UK, you can then be registered in your home country. For an up to date list of eligible countries see: ARB MRA/MOU
Widening access to architecture at the RCA
At the RCA we are committed to widening access for everyone to pursue a career in architecture. The built environment shapes communities in many different ways, and it is crucial that the designers of the built environment represent the full range of communities that it serves.
Our Graduate Diploma in Architecture & Spatial Practice is one of the ways that we are making routes into a career in architecture more accessible. Since 2024, we have run an outreach programme with schools and further education colleges in London to raise awareness of architecture as a career, uncover what architects do and demonstrate the impact of architecture on society.
