Jinsun Lee is a PhD student in the RCA Robotics Laboratory, based within the School of Design. Her research investigates AI-generated faces, model-conditioned facial representation, and the implications of AI-generated facial imagery for humanoid face design.
Through a practice-based comparative archive, she examines recurring facial characteristics and representational patterns produced under standardised prompting conditions across different image-generation models.
Rather than treating AI-generated faces as accurate representations of human populations, her work approaches them as synthetic visual artefacts shaped by model architectures, training data, and generation parameters.
Bringing together visual communication, branding, AI visual culture, and design research, her work explores how generative systems influence social legibility, facial perception, and emerging forms of visual governance.

Biography
Jinsun Lee is a designer and researcher working across visual communication, branding, AI-generated imagery, and design research. She is currently undertaking a PhD within the RCA Robotics Laboratory at the Royal College of Art, School of Design. Her research investigates AI-generated faces as synthetic, model-conditioned visual artefacts, with a particular interest in recurring facial patterns, algorithmic typicality, humanoid face design, and emerging visual governance.
Jinsun holds a BA in Visual Communication Design from Hongik University in Seoul and an MA in Graphic Design from London College of Communication. Her MA research examined newspaper design formats, including broadsheet, Berliner and tabloid structures, as visual systems for organising information, public discourse, and reader attention.
Earlier in her career, Jinsun worked in South Korea as a newspaper designer and editor for major national newspapers with distinct editorial cultures and public positions. During this period, her editorial design work was recognised by a professional association of Korean newspaper editors, reflecting her experience in visual hierarchy, layout, and public-facing communication. This shaped her long-standing interest in editorial systems, visual judgement, and the sensitivity of images in public-facing media.
Jinsun currently works at Just Eat Takeaway.com as part of its Global Studio, contributing to global campaign design, brand systems, digital content, and AI-related creative workflows across teams in London, Amsterdam, and Poland. Alongside design execution, she contributes to internal discussions around responsible AI use, creative governance, and design production workflows involving emerging AI tools.
Before joining Just Eat Takeaway.com, Jinsun worked across brand identity, packaging, retail communication, marketing design, and online campaign projects for brands including itsu and PayPal. Across her professional and academic work, she explores how visual systems shape the ways people, cultures, and technologies are represented
