Work & City Projects

How can designers make living and working in our cities more inclusive and sustainable?

Plan of layout

The Work & City projects investigate changing patterns of working and urban life at a number of scales – from the architectural master plan to the human interaction with spaces and systems. We are focused less on designing artefacts and place-making than on developing practical tools and frameworks that help us understand the changing city and the workplaces within it.

Working directly with people in the design process we ask how design can be used to make living and working in our cities more inclusive and sustainable?

Themes and Projects

Projects are grouped under four themes, each one addressing a research question:

How can the design of our physical workspaces support changing patterns of work and growing demands for health and wellbeing at work?

Workspace projects examine ways in which work environments can be improved and enhanced to meet the needs of people. Projects range from the scale of furniture and products to the urban plan.

How can design enhance our work/life balance?
How can technology be used to help us manage our professional and social lives in the way we want to?

Work-Life projects look at design strategies and innovations that explore the balance or blend between working and living. Home working is a key area for study here, as is flexible and mobile working.

Urban Infrastructure
How can we design our public realm to be more inclusive of the needs of the people who use it?

Urban Infrastructure projects look at the city in terms of the core services and infrastructures that create the urban fabric in which we live and work. Issues of mobility, density, access and regeneration are considered under this theme.

Digital Communities
How can we harness digital technology to connect and engage urban communities in new ways?

Digital Communities projects study the impact of digital technology on urban communities, examining the connections and conflicts between the physical and the virtual realms.
