The Design Different Magazine title comes from this simple idea: design with a difference, to make a difference. The goal of the magazine is to showcase the innovative work of the centre in addition to demonstrating how the research speaks to current and urgent global concerns and challenges.

The publication features activity reports and think-pieces from the research teams at the Design Age Institute and the Centre’s four research spaces; Age & Diversity, Healthcare, Inclusive Design for Business Impact, Inclusive Design for Social Impact and the Public Toilets Research Unit.

Design Different Magazine

“This magazine covers the activities and aspirations of the centre with contributions from over 50 people. It represents a snapshot of inclusive design in 2021, and calls for people around the globe to share in the ideas and join in the conversation.”

Rama Gheerawo Director of the Helen Hamlyn Centre of Design

In addition there are articles focusing on the centre’s work in inclusive education, The 2021 Helen Hamlyn Awards, current PhD projects and people pathway highlights, including features on Ralf Alwani, Dr Will Rennel, Dr Cecelia Zecca and her work on the centre’s first Knowledge Transfer Partnership, and Laura Salisbury and her UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship and development of a new research lab in the RCA.

This edition also marks the 30th anniversary of the centre with retrospective and forward facing articles on the evolution of the Centre by Rama Gheerawo, Director of the Helen Hamlyn Centre of Design, Professor Emeritus Jeremy Myerson, Helen Hamlyn Chair of Design and Lady Helen Hamlyn.
