IKAWA Home Roaster

Digital micro coffee roasters linking the coffee drinker directly to the coffee farmer.

Founded by Royal College of Art graduates, Andrew Stordy and Romboult Frieling, IKAWA is a micro-roasting system that is looking to revolutionise the word of coffee for producers and consumers.

Andrew invented the concept while studying at the RCA and has developed over a hundred prototypes, receiving support from the James Dyson Foundation in patenting the unique roasting system. The company was founded in 2010, backed by private equity investment, with support from Geneva based Schluter SA coffee importers and the InnovationRCA Incubator.

Andrew grew up in coffee growing countries and has the vision for IKAWA to change the coffee industry for the benefit of coffee growers as well as coffee drinkers. An integral vision of the project is to provide a rewarding trading relationship with smallholder coffee farmers and help them improve their coffee quality.

Coffee enthusiasts are able to order green beans, which can then be roasted and ground in an IKAWA Home Roaster. Industry professionals can use the Pro Roaster to test new harvests and replicate these roasts when back in the office. Both roasters are controlled using a smart-phone app which allows the user to control duration, temperature and airflow of the roast to create unique roast profiles.
