Evidence of Absence
This research examines the epistemological, logistical, and ethical dimensions of hospital architecture and the institutional environments of healthcare. It pays particular attention to the ways in which diagnostic imaging informs conceptions of the human body and plays a decisive role in architectural planning. Using the Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli in Rome, whose status as a Catholic institution introduces specific moral frameworks and tensions between medical practice, doctrine, and governance, and especially its radiology and radiotherapy units as a case study, the thesis considers the biopolitical forces that shape these complex settings. The project analyses how the arrangement of medical facilities is closely linked to visual interpretations of disease, while also reflecting the negotiations that arise when clinical decision-making intersects with religious ethics. By bringing architectural and clinical perspectives into dialogue, the study traces both historical precedents and current transformations.

Biography
Marina Addis Waldmann has a full training in Architecture and a strong interest in transdisciplinary research and creative practices. Her work focuses on the human relation to built environments through the understanding of cognitive and perceptual mechanisms, with a particular attention to narratives of vulnerabilities. She grew up in Italy, but was trained in Paris at École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture Paris Val de Seine (2018). She co-founded Atelier Mama Goose, an interdisciplinary studio in Montreuil, France (2017). She earned a Master in Moving Images at Università IUAV di Venezia (2022). She was an intern at Fondazione La Biennale di Venezia (2021), collaborated with Mela Media Lab (2022) and more recently with Francesco Careri and the Laboratorio di Città Corviale. Her first short film Anisocoria was presented in the group exhibitions Debris curated by Peter Weltz at FBLM in Venice (2022) and We will design at Base Milano during Milano Design Week (2023). She co-curated Casa Dolce Casa at Biennale Spazio Pubblico in Rome (2023). She is currently a PhD candidate at Royal College of Art in London funded by the London Arts and Humanities Partnership (LAHP).
