Join Dr Chris McGinley, leader of the Helen Hamlyn Centre of Design’s Age & Diversity Research Space for an update on the last year at the HHCD. Followed by an introduction from Colum Lowe the new Director of our recently launched Design Age Institute, who will set out his plans for the Institute and explain why bringing more innovative, inclusive design to the ageing market is key to unlocking the commercial potential of the sector whilst supporting the wellbeing of our ageing communities.

The one hour session will also include short and sharp overviews of three projects from HHCD researchers, dealing with housing and community innovation for over 55s at Guinness Care; wearables for kids with ADHD with King’s College; and a project in partnership with Heart n Soul at The Wellcome Hub exploring inclusive futures led by a co-design team that brings first-hand experiences of learning disabilities and autism to the table.
The session will conclude with a provocative presentation from Colum outlining market failure and risk in design-led innovation, and ending with a quickfire Q&A session with the panel.
Stephen Douche
Stephen is an award-winning designer with a broad professional experience working across a range of sectors including; consumer goods, transportation, mobile communications and FMCG.
Stephen graduated in Product and Furniture Design from De Montfort University where he won the RSA Student Design Award for toy design. This led to a ten year career creating products for influential toy brands such as Hasbro, Disney, Mattel and Lego.
He returned to education in 2012 to complete his Masters degree in Industrial Design at Central Saint Martin’s School of Art and Design. His thesis, Last Orders, investigated the UK’s funeral industry; the rising cost incurred, the historic sanitisation, the lack of choice and the role design could play in alleviating these issues. Stephen’s project was NOVA nominated, placed him as a finalist for Designer of the Year at New Designers and exhibited at 2014’s Restless Futures Exhibition.
More recently, Stephen has worked as an Innovation Consultant, developing design strategies and services for large technology companies, such as Ford, Microsoft and Intel. He is also a contributor to education as a lecturer and collaborator for UAL’s Industrial Design course and innovation centre respectively.
William Renel, Research Associate, HHCD
Dr Renel’s practice emerges at the junctions between inclusive design and critical disability studies. He is a member of Heart n Soul at the Hub – an interdisciplinary disabled-led research team investigating how relationships between people with and without learning disabilities affect mutual wellbeing as well as the Director of Research at community interest company Touretteshero.
