Bine Roth

Bine Roth is a material specialist and trained jewellery designer with an MA in Textiles Mixed Media from the Royal College of Art, where she is a Tutor (Research) in the Textiles programme.

Her research explores smart textiles, haptic experiences, wearable technologies, and textile interfaces, combining traditional craft with digital fabrication and emerging technologies. Her practice spans weaving, coding, material experimentation, and interactive prototyping across both physical and digital environments.

Alongside her academic practice, Bine is co-director of the London-based design collective Peut-Porter, creating installations, performances, and participatory experiences that explore the relationship between bodies, materials, and technology. Peut-Porter's work has been exhibited and performed internationally, including at the Venice Biennale, the Design Museum London, Sadler's Wells Theatre, the Museum of London, Jerusalem Design Week, BFI London, Deutsches Technikmuseum, and De Doelen Theatre Rotterdam.

Bine has taught, lectured, and led workshops internationally, supporting interdisciplinary approaches to material innovation and emerging technologies.

Practice

Bine co-directs with Alexa Pollmann (Subject Leader in Wearable Technology at the School of Design & Technology, London College of Fashion) the collective Peut-Porter based in South London. Their work has been exhibited and performed internationally.

Peut-Porter has shown at the Design Museum London, Sadler’s Wells Theatre, Museum of London, Jerusalem Design Week, BFI London, Deutsches Technikmuseum, Venice Biennale, and De Doelen Theatre Rotterdam, amongst others. By augmenting reality through physical and digital means, they invite audiences to perform body politics as they join the collective experiences. Motivated by macro systems of social and political context, their work is guided by their understanding and knowledge of traditional making and offers a response on a micro-level; informed by fashion, textile and silversmithing techniques, they create wearable artefacts that expand the realms of wearable technology, meandering the fine line between gadget and garment, costume and avatar, and the interdependence between self and other.

They create interactions with garments and devices that transform human relationships to others – theatrical experiences offer entry to ritual-like moments of dressing and becoming whilst inviting the idea of gameplay, agency and interaction.

In 2021, Bine undertook a residency creating motion capture accessories at the German Museum of Technology in Berlin for their project DAZZLE – a multi-sensory live performance installation – an incredible fusion of dance, fashion and immersive technology in collaboration with artist duo GibsonMartelli.

Current and recent projects

Karighor Archive is a digital tool developed in collaboration with Bangladeshi textile makers to document their heritage craft processes and digitally display their work. Based on the principle ‘Nothing about Us Without Us’, Dhaka-based textile artisans were invited to discuss their vision of future-craft through workshops led by Design Studio Paraa (Dhaka) and Design Studio Peut-Porter (London). A first co-design challenge between Bangladeshi Master Weavers and design students acts as an exploration into how digital tools such as the Karighor Archive could shape and define the future of craft by honouring the skills, knowledge, creativity and cultural setting of all individuals involved in the design, production and development of a textile. Eliminating hierarchies between design and production, the project aims to encourage an exchange of practice and knowledge, open source working methods, and collective forms of organising and producing textiles.

Generative Weaving with and for the body is a collaborative research conducted by researchers based in Japan and UK, focusing on material technologies and pattern creation. The study investigates both traditional kimono fabric production and the exploration of new materials, such as high-twist yarns, utilising contemporary techniques facilitated by Grasshopper, Houdini, Processing and Clo3D software. By employing forward-thinking production methods and exploring the intersection of digital and physical material-making processes, the research aims to develop body-fit materials and patterns. Specifically, the research poses the question of how to approach the design of complex and three-dimensional woven textiles by employing a diverse range of digital and physical tools, enabling the creation of intricate woven structures.

Through the initial phase of this research, the study successfully created multidimensional and shape-changing cloth structures using zero-waste patterns as a construction method. The research primarily focuses on the transformative capabilities of materials and their role in supporting the design process for the (re)creation of sensory materials. By interpreting the traditional weaving technique with multiple technologies, it is possible to create advanced materials.
