Amelia Jane Hankin leads studioAJH; a multidisciplinary practice that spans scenography, speculative spatial design and education.
Amelia is an Associate Artist of Shakespeare’s Globe and a member of Brixton House’s Artistic Advisory Collective. As a Production Designer Amelia has 17+ years experience collaborating with leading companies, producers and artists across the UK and internationally including Shakespeare’s Globe, The Royal Exchange, Fuel, Donmar Warehouse, RSC, Historic Royal Palaces, V&A, Almeida Theatre, Graeae, Kiln, Young Vic, Chichester Festival Theatre, Bush Theatre and Perth International Festival.
Amelia has worked across an extensive range of art forms, spaces, scales and locations. Her practice is founded on the belief that space is never neutral and that confronting its politics through work rooted in identity, belonging, community and social justice is paramount. Amelia specialises in creating active environments for shared live experience; spaces that are bold and participatory, that invite reflection and transformation, uncover truths and champion conversation.
Amelia has taught both undergraduate and postgraduate students in Spatial Design for 10+ years and has delivered lectures and workshops at institutions including UWE, Warwick University, University of Nottingham, Regents University and with young people, schools, artists and communities associated with the Shakespeare’s Globe, RSC, The Old Vic, The Royal Exchange, Almeida Theatre and Lyric Hammersmith.
Amelia holds a First Class BArch (Hons) in Architecture from the University of Nottingham, PGDip Distinction in Theatre Design from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and was awarded the Leverhulme Arts Scholarship, Resident Associate Designer at the Royal Shakespeare Company.
