English Language Requirements
Information for candidates whose first language is not English (including those who attended an English-speaking University for their undergraduate studies).

The information below details the requirements for applicants taking the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examination. Where provision is made for equivalent qualifications, these are defined in the College’s Admissions Policy.
Graduate Diploma Applicants
The College requires applicants for entry to the Graduate Diploma to have the equivalent of an overall IELTS score of 5.5 with a minimum 5.5 across each area.
The College requires applicants for entry to an MA course (except Global Innovation Design and Innovation Design Engineering, see below) to have the equivalent of an IELTS Academic score of 6.5 with a 6.0 in the Test of Written English (TWE)
Applicants who have gained a second class (upper division) degree or above, from a university in a majority English speaking nation within the last two years are exempt from this requirement, for MA Programmes only.
Applicants for the MA/MSc in Global Innovation Design ONLY are required to have English Language proficiency requirements of or equivalent to an IELTS Academic score of 7.0 with a 6.5 in the Test of Written English (TWE).
Applicants for the MA/MSc in Innovation Design Engineering ONLY are required to have English Language proficiency requirements of or equivalent to an IELTS Academic score of 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any of the four components of the test.
MRes ApplicantsMRes applicants must have the equivalent of
- An IELTS score of 6.5 with a 6.0 in the Test of Written English (TWE).
MPhil applicants (by project and thesis) must have the equivalent of :
- An IELTS score of 6.5 with a 6.5 in the Test of Written English (TWE).
PhD applicants (by project and thesis) must have the equivalent of an IELTS score of 7.0 with a 7.0 in the Test of Written English (TWE).
Please note: Tests for all applicants must have been taken a maximum of two years prior to the date of registration. Please upload a copy of your test certificate as part of your application if possible.
If you have taken a test and achieved the required grade within the time limits listed above, please bring the original certificate with you to the interview and give it to the administrator to be copied. You may then take the original back with you.
If you have not already taken an approved English Language Test and achieved the required score as listed above, then we will advise you to book a test if you are invited to an interview with the College.
Home Office Tier 4 Requirements
In addition to the RCA’s minimum requirements, students who need a Tier 4 visa for their studies at the RCA will need to show that they have met Home Office’s minimum requirements for entry clearance.

EAP Pre-Sessional Courses
The College offers an eight-week EAP Pre-Sessional Course runs from July to September every year for applicants who have not reached the required IELTS level before they start their Programme. Entry level for the eight-week Pre-sessional Course is IELTS (Academic) 6.0 overall with minimum 5.5–6.0 in the writing or 6.5 overall with 5.5 in the writing, or equivalent recognised by the College.
We also offer a four-week version of the pre-sessional course in August–September for students who have reached the required level of IELTS but wish to brush up their language skills. The pre-sessional course provides a valuable chance to practise academic English in the context of art and design with authentic and relevant tasks and materials.
