Currently Reader in Design-STEM Practice at Northumbria, Anne Toomey specialises in responsive and interactive printed surfaces. She brings with her an in-depth understanding of, and experience in postgraduate teaching and research. From 1997 to 2004 Anne Toomey led the printed textile specialism at the RCA, before being appointed deputy to outgoing Head of Programme Professor Clare Johnston.

An authority on textile design, colour and materials, she has international experience in research-based design, product development, manufacture, and consultancy. Anne Toomey has published widely, in particular on the subject of smart textiles and D:STEM, and has presented at conferences internationally.

Her professional experience and expertise has been built up by working for a cross section of companies and designers, including a three year period with Timney Fowler Ltd.

Anne Toomey’s appointment follows the announcement of the retirement of the current Head of Textiles, Professor Clare Johnston.

Professor Naren Barfield, Pro-Rector (Academic) of the Royal College of Art commented: 'I am delighted to welcome Anne back to the School of Material. Her experience, background and achievements are a perfect match for Textiles at the College: I am confident that she will continue to build on the enormous success of her predecessor, Professor Clare Johnston.'

Professor Judith Mottram, Dean of the School of Material added: 'Anne has a distinguished track record as Textiles practitioner and educator and as leader and motivator. Her appointment ensures the currency of the discipline at a time of tremendous and exciting advances within the wider arena of materials.'

Anne Toomey said: 'Building on the Programme’s excellent reputation established by Professor Johnston, my focus will be the growth and development of Textiles here at the RCA. I am a firm believer in sharing knowledge and expertise and look forward to working with colleagues from across the College, old and new.'

This appointment concludes an international search. Anne Toomey will take up her position towards the end of September, 2015.
