This research project focuses on one of the most vulnerable groups of our community, i.e., children. Until recently the design and planning of cities, specifically with respect to public spaces and mobility, has not focused on the needs of children. Moving past current design and planning regimes excluding vulnerable groups from participating in decision making requires posing epistemic questions on the role of knowledge production in just mobility and urban transitions. In this matter, the vision of the younger citizens is rarely considered a valid source of knowledge.

This project presents the outputs, such as drawings and 3 dimensional models, created during a series of participatory and society-centric workshops with children (6–11 yrs old) and families from the neighbourhood of Winstanley Estate in London Borough of Wandsworth. These workshops empowered children to imagine and explore the things they wished were there to make the streets more playful, fun and accessible. This project creates awareness among the young members of our communities to be active in designing the spaces they inhabit on a daily basis and also impacts the entire ecosystem that revolves around children, including parents, caregivers, their peers, educators and local communities. The purpose of this engagement exercise is to raise awareness and educate children (and their caregivers) on the transformational potential of using parking space for public space functions.
