Can loss be translated through the medical image? Join our PhD Researcher, Sofie Layton for a series of events exploring gestational loss and grief.
Sofie Layton's project takes the form of a ‘care laboratory’ which explores the complexity of gestation and grief through discussion, workshops and performative encounters within the art installation. Medical imagery and data have been (re)imagined and transformed into cyanotype prints, sculptures, film, writing and sound which incorporate participants’ experience of illness and pregnancy loss. The work is part of a practice-based doctoral research into methods of translating individual experiences of pregnancy, baby and child loss. Viewers are invited to engage directly with the artwork, which also becomes a space for conversation and debate.
All events are free and will be held in the Dyson Building, Battersea - booking essential.
The symposium on 6 October 2023 will will facilitate an exploration of the complexities and realities of loss through a range of artistic and social lenses, bringing together specialists from different backgrounds - Art History, Photography, Curation, Medical Humanities, Medical Science and Imaging, Psychology and Social Advocacy.
