Following the recent passing of Avi Chetri (MA Animation, 2018), the RCA invites you to a celebration of his life and work.

Alexander Laurence, Avi’s brother, has shared some words on Avi and the upcoming celebration event:
“Avi's animated films are a touching tribute to his artistic vision and profound philosophical insight. Living with autism spectrum disorder, Avi harnessed the medium of hand-drawn animation to delve into complex themes of displacement, belonging, and identity. His work, resonating with universal appeal, explored the intricate personal struggles of individuals while making a compelling call for a shift in collective consciousness.
These films serve as a unique expression of Avi's inner world, intertwining his personal narrative with broader societal issues, deeply influenced by his dedication to Buddhist principles. The subtle nuances of his hand-drawn art belie a depth that forges a meaningful connection with the audience, inviting them to share in the characters' journeys. Avi's creative output challenges the norm of self-centeredness, advocating for a shift towards empathy, interconnectedness, and mindfulness.
This screening transcends a mere commemoration of Avi's artistic legacy; it represents an invitation to engage with and embody the values he held dear. His animations encourage a reevaluation of our life choices and our interactions with others, promoting a vision of the world characterised by solidarity, compassion, and collective awakening. His belief in the power of community to mitigate isolation and individualism shines through as a hopeful theme for a more harmonious future.
In remembrance of Avi, who at the age of 29 died by suicide, this event also serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of mental health awareness, particularly among young people and those with autism spectrum disorder. As we immerse ourselves in Avi's animated world, we are inspired to further his vision, where mindfulness, peace, and love are not just ideals, but active agents in shaping a compassionate and interconnected world. Tonight, through Avi's eyes, we embark on a path of transformative change, recognizing the critical role our actions and mindset play in creating the future he dreamed of, while underscoring the significance of mental health support in our communities.”
The event will include speeches from RCA staff, and Avi’s friends and family, who will share memories of Avi, and highlight the importance of mental health awareness, particularly among young people and those with autism spectrum disorder. Please be aware that this will include discussion of death by suicide.
Following the screenings, attendees will have the opportunity to gather for a reception, where they can share reflections and memories.
