Driving AI-enabled transformation in education and creative organisations

James King is a strategic technology leader specialising in AI-enabled digital transformation across higher education and nonprofit environments. As Director of Technology at the Royal College of Art, he leads the development of secure, cloud-ready, and AI-aware technology ecosystems that empower teaching, research and institutional innovation

With more than 20 years of experience in complex organisations, James operates at the intersection of strategy, governance and emerging technology. He is particularly focused on embedding artificial intelligence responsibly into institutional roadmaps, ensuring the College is not only technically prepared, but culturally and ethically ready to harness AI for meaningful impact

James champions a pragmatic, value-led approach to AI adoption, driven by a clear belief: AI and digital innovation should expand opportunity, amplify human creativity and enable institutions to deliver greater social and educational impact, securely, responsibly and at scale.

His work ensures that the College can adopt emerging tools such as generative AI, automation and data-driven systems without compromising trust, security or academic integrity.

James holds an MSc in IT Strategy: Digital and Technology Solutions from Aston University and is a certified educator in emerging AI technologies.
