An early wildfire warning system

Pyri is developing a bio-inspired and based early wildfire detection system for remote and low-cost coverage. The heat from nascent wildfires activates Pyri’s novel electronics which emit an Radio Frequency signal to alert adjacent communities.

Climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of wildfires globally. By 2100, extreme wildfires are predicted to increase by 50%, most significantly in the Arctic and tropical forests where communities are unprepared. Conventional solutions require prohibitive amounts of time, money, and labour to install and maintain. Effective early wildfire detection will be key to reducing wildfire devastation.

The PyriPod, inspired by serotinous pinecones, comprise a patent-pending heat-triggered detection mechanism made from nature-derived materials.

The PyriPods can be dispersed in remote areas and when a wildfire starts, send distinct RF signals to existing communication towers or dedicated receivers to enable the location of the nascent fire to be determined. Finally, the triggered PyriPod burns up with minimal environmental impact due to its nontoxic composition.

Pyri is founded by Innovation Design Engineering graduates Richard Alexandre, Richard “Blake” Goodwyn and Karina Gunadi.
