MRes Entrance Requirements
Candidates are selected for places entirely on merit and applications are welcomed from all over the world.
Candidates should usually have a good first degree (2:1 or above) in a related subject. We warmly welcome applications from applicants at all stages in their careers, and view both prior academic and professional experience as valuable preparation for the MRes Programme.
Applications will be assessed on a candidate’s existing academic and practice-base skills as demonstrated firstly in the application form and portfolio (where appropriate) and subsequently in interview. The admissions panel will also consider applicants' potential to benefit from the course, achieve the required standards overall and to use the course as a platform for future career ambitions.
The panel will base these considerations upon evidence of:
- an understanding of the role of research within art and design contexts
- an ability to articulate the intentions of the work
- intellectual engagement in relevant areas
- appropriate technical skills
- overall interview performance, including the use of oral English
All applications should be made using the online system and submitted with a CV, a brief (500-word) statement that outlines your motivation for applying and your research themes. Applicants wanting to pursue a practice-based project should also submit a portfolio of recent work.
Candidates who do not speak English as their first language are required to produce evidence that within the previous two years they have achieved an IELTS exam score of 6.5 with at least 6 in writing.
