The capture and use of digital data has the potential to transform cities. The RCA has partnered with Imperial College London on the interdisciplinary EPSRC-funded Digital City Exchange research project. The project explores ways to digitally link utilities and services within a city, enabling new technical and business opportunities. The overall research programme focuses on harnessing next generation digital systems to combine and repurpose city data: ultimately, transforming the planning and use of cities and innovation in services.
The Service Design research team under Dr Nick de Leon has focused on public service innovation: developing new tools for the design, simulation, visualisation and trialling of new public services, as well as enabling large scale deployment. The work has involved a wide range of commercial and institutional partners, enabling the team to explore services for mobility, housing, health and social services, and to demonstrate the relevance of service design as a tool for policy and strategy development for governments and business. The work has been presented at major conferences including the OECD Future States 2016 Conference in Santiago Chile, the Smart City World Congress in Barcelona, and the Global Service Design Network Conference, New York.
