'Mirror Mirror on the Wall'
I
am fascinated by the reflective properties of materials. I work with
reflective
materials such as mirror, stones, acrylic, and metals. The mirror
is a visual metaphor and medium that expresses aspects of ‘us’. The
mirror
shows not just our appearance but also what we want, imagine, and desire
to see
through a magical surface. I have explored the possibility of creating
jewellery through reflection, experimenting with transformation
between 2D and 3D, the real and virtual
world, self and other, the inside and outside.
Looking at this mirror at first glance, the viewer is confronted with a special perspective that results from overlapping and multiple reflections. I imagined what the viewer might see. They can look at their self-portrait with a pearl necklace and then this beauty is captured in and on the mirror. The reflected image is an illusion which surprises and enchants the viewer.
This pair of earrings features the principle of reflection, which is entirely illusory. The stunning coloured ruby is placed at the centre. It creates multiple and duplicate images on the surface of the metal surround and the balanced equilateral form and reflective images of stones appear as a bunch of flowers.
