Re-Cocoon

A series of silk lamps directly moulded from silk cocoons. The idea of this project came from my curiosity of silk textile production and processes such as silk spinning. I produce these lamps by boiling the silk cocoons and directly spinning silk fibre from them onto a mould. I can continually spin approximately 1.5 kilometres of fibre from each cocoon, which allows me to then produce these lamps. In order for these lamps to hold their shape. I utilise silk's natural glue-like protein, Sericin. Each lamp is completed only from the natural properties of silk.

  • The theme of my studies at the Royal College of Art is new manufacturing processes. In addition, I am curious about new uses of natural material properties from the perspective of designing. I started the Re-Cocoon project, a series of silk lamps directly moulded from silk cocoons.
