Re-Cocoon
A series of silk lamps directly moulded from silk cocoons. The idea of this project came from my curiosity of silk textile production and processes such as silk spinning. I produce these lamps by boiling the silk cocoons and directly spinning silk fibre from them onto a mould. I can continually spin approximately 1.5 kilometres of fibre from each cocoon, which allows me to then produce these lamps. In order for these lamps to hold their shape. I utilise silk's natural glue-like protein, Sericin. Each lamp is completed only from the natural properties of silk.

The theme of my studies at the Royal College of Art is new manufacturing processes. In addition, I am curious about new uses of natural material properties from the perspective of designing. I started the Re-Cocoon project, a series of silk lamps directly moulded from silk cocoons. The idea of this project came from my curiosity of silk textile production and processes such as silk spinning. I produce these lamps by boiling the silk cocoons and directly spinning silk fibre from them onto a mould.
