Yasmeen Sabri

MA work

'Snapchat me that crisis' and 'Walk a mile in her Burka'

My work engages with the refugee crisis, and the stigma towards veiled women in the media, through interactive and performative works. Through investigative journalism and performance, my work critiques the way social and mass media are curated and used. I situate myself at the centre of my work, using film to articulate opinions, using screens and the veil as an interface into the life of an Arab woman and the borders implied by cultural hegemony.

Snapchat me that Crisis is based on original interviews with volunteers and refugees, and visits to the Zatarai refugee camp in Jordan, exhibited here as a critique of the amount and expression of information on social media.

The burka piece is an introspection of Arab identity through the lens of the veil and its user, inviting visitors to try on he veil and understand first hand the cultural and social motives behind it.

  • Yasmeen Sabri makes films, paintings, performances and installations.

Trained as a painter, I have been studying Information Experience Design at the RCA to work in the gap between art and design. My work has evolved from a subjective, abstract approach to more confrontational, thought-provoking experiences.
