Hyper-Ventilaition (Venus), Hyper-Ventilaition (Neptune) & Bright Tapestry (Wednesday 17 May 2017)
My work plays with the notion that perception is a channel for both observation and creation. Imagination being the potential generative force within humans to go beyond themselves to radiate outwards and extend into the world, my work reverses this idea positing that the spaces themselves have their own creative agency or force that might be set off into a ceaseless process of self-generation. These works are filters that catalyse or intensify this latent mimetic potential locked into the space, a compulsion to become other or maybe just similar.
Bright Tapestry pieces reactivate and re-sensitises obsolete weather forecasting data. These sugar drawings propose a kind of doubled vision that references the membrane (tapetum lucidum) at the back of cats' eyes which enables a literal doubling of light passing through an eye. The drawings encourage a pervasive feeling of déjà vu or a precognition-like sense that other spaces and times are made manifest or are in some kind of remote-communication with the room.

I am interested in excessive or supplementary modes of decoration, using them as vehicles for techniques of kinds of 'overseeing'. Using a range of source material I extend their logic to the point that they outplay or influence over the space in which they are installed. Space becomes 'imagized', where the reversibility that is constitutive of the creative operation within perception spans the spectrum between perceiver and perceived, site and seer. This doubling of spaces in my work plays with ideas of excess or annexation of vision where a 'magical copy' might hold influence over the original or where real and imaginary spaces are given equal presence.
