Landscape screen print, Vanessa Hindshaw 2018

Informed by personal photography taken throughout the Faroes Islands and Scotland, Vanessa’s project seeks to communicate the atmosphere of these landscapes and the narratives they possess. Human connection and a sense of place are key concepts explored throughout her work - the place informs the design, enabling a reflective focus on colour, materials, process, and context.

Exploring the concept of textiles as communication, the sense of place expressed throughout this project is also intended to evoke a slower pace of living. This is primarily conveyed through a craft-led process encouraging a renewed connection with the maker.

Combining analog and digital processes, Vanessa has developed a collection of screen-printed interior textiles, handmade quilts and wooden surface designs aimed at modern homes seeking mindful living spaces. Interactions between colour, materials, and traditional and modern techniques celebrate the purpose and value of contemporary craft in the digital age.

  • Vanessa is a print designer specialising in screen-printed fabrics, quilts and interior surfaces.

Influenced by northern landscapes, her work communicates a sense of place through a craft-led process and encourages human connection through making. Favouring slow design processes, Vanessa’s visual language is characterised by intuitive mark-making and hand-painted brush strokes merged with bold shapes and colourful graphic compositions.

Using a combination of natural materials including organic cotton, wool, linen and wooden surfaces, Vanessa creates contemporary designs for interiors which are intended to last beyond seasonal trends and develop in character with use.
