A Wood Workshop for a Wood Craftsman in a Woodland

This project proposes a studio, workshop and exhibition space for Guanshuai Mao: a Chinese handcraftsman who enjoys working in a peaceful, secluded, calm woodland.

This project will relocate Mao to a secluded woodland in Shiyan, Hubei Province, China. Though remote, the site is only a 20 minute drive from the chaos of the city and will provide Mao with a practical base in close proximity to the natural environment that he likes to work in and with.

The design of the workshop is based on the Maison Dom-ino system in using a concrete structure, within which a wooden block is introduced with all the necessary functions inside. The aim was to create a harmonious relationship between the woodland, the concrete structure, the wooden block and Mao’s poetic woodwork.

Most importantly, the details within the wooden block where Mao will live and work all began within his hand – his touch, craft and scale.
