_IN DIETARY LAW. — The Beaver’s broad, scaly base is made from a Special Demon fishtail lawn-tennis racket by Slazenger & Sons, London, with an ash frame in very good condition and replaced stringing. The Demon logo is stamped on one side of the throat and Alan Watson, Manchester (the retailer), on the reverse. Also: Special Demon is stamped on the top of one side of the head. When Thomas Aquinas classified beavers as fish in the seventeenth century, this was due to their habit as much as their anatomy, it meant that Catholics could eat guilt-free meat during Lent. The fishtail lawn-tennis racket handletip is placed slightly protruding beneath the exotic hardwood, African padauk, so as to stand in for the beaver’s webbed feet. This collocation somewhat resembles the topsy-turvy decision-making depicted in early Renaissance demons, _2010.
