FRIENDFICTION
(Or The Fan and The Friend)
This project uses visual storytelling to question the tension between fan and producer generated through unofficial fanwork. Underpinned by fan studies, the story illustrates the enduring relationships and self-sustaining communities of creators that can be generated through the production of and shared affinity with fanwork. Through engaging with a cut-and-paste approach - in homage to relevant franchises with cult followings - the project comments on fanwork in both its form and content.
In the vein of magic realism, the story follows two housemates as they use fanfiction to “self-insert” into the worlds of different pre-existing franchises. The Fan writes fanfiction and The Friend finds herself written into these fantastical stories without agency; as all that she does is written by The Fan. Through this journey, The Friend is forced to take control by writing her own stories, and finding her own creative potential - while the Fan is forced to reckon with her true motivations for writing fanfiction.
