Exhibitions for Children
This project started by considering how museums cater for the needs of children. The institutions of London provided a wonderful resource to explore, investigate and learn from and extensive research into existing provisions revealed that there are many aspects of a child’s museum visit that can be improved. This might involve the exhibition itself, learning spaces or support facilities such as eating areas and toilets.
Ultimately the project chose to concentrate on exhibition spaces and the improvement of the child visitor’s experience through the encouragement of improved interaction with the exhibition material.
The proposal introduces a display system that could be used in many museums to present information to children in an engaging and playful manner. A family of bold objects can be arranged in endless informal compositions whilst soft, tactile, robust materials encourage young people to interact with exhibitions in a positive way.
