Typeface Legibility
In order to locate the most legible letterforms, a range of letter variations was tested on three new typefaces. The findings show that distance viewing will improve if a serif is placed on the top of the stem of the letter ‘i’; that the middle part of the ‘a’ and ‘s’ in general benefits from being more rounded than diagonal; that the crossbar of the ‘e’ should be placed at the visual centre with an open aperture; that a closed aperture of the ‘c’ is equally as legible as an open aperture, and that, except for the lowercase ‘f’, narrow characters benefit from being slightly broadened. I have implemented these findings in the final designs of the typefaces.
