MA work

The hugging machine invites non-verbal sensory interaction, bringing long-distance lovers together through synchronised hug behaviour.

It is only a matter of time before all human to human interactions are not only diminished, via automatic machines, if automation technology continues to be accepted in the world at the rate it is now. This project takes hugging behaviour as an example to discuss how machines can understand our behaviour and emotions. As a part that is already engaged in our relationship, what role it plays now and what role will it play in the future.

  • Shuming Cui is a designer and researcher who explores the intersection of art, technology, and experience.

Her practice and research investigates tangible interactive forms of human computer interaction, and speculative concepts attempt to explore the symbiotic relationship between computational systems and human. Rather than focusing on making technology easy to use, sexy, and consumable, Shuming's work opens debate and discussion about the kind of future people want and don’t want.
