Visual Equilibrium

The project restores the value of original by defeating the purpose of digital photography's reproducibility. It is to find an artistically legitimate way to create a unique(unreproducible) image, still based on the essence of photography. Therefore, the project affirms the value of original as well as the aesthetics of image. In other words, it creates a balanced relationship between the original and its image, which I call, "Visual Equilibrium." The project is a counter response to the current time where images are flooded and consumed so conveniently that the value of original is lost and disconnected with the image. Digital cameras and mobile phones publish millions of digital images everyday through both mainstream and social media. Images have become convenient and cheap, which, of course, has a positive side but also has made me think about the lost presence of the original, the actual, and the real.

  • The fundamental principle of Schinster's photographic practice is to challenge the tradition, convention, and definition of photography without compromising its essence. Genres vary from street photography to installation, utilizing multiple media. While maintaining experimental spirit, his work reveals underlying thread of common sense and classical composition which play a key role in creating visually convincing images.
