Knock Knock. Who’s there?

Doctor. Doctor who?

Who? Who?

Mania is usually a feeling of elevation and optimism. These feelings can get so intense that the person loses contact with reality. When this happens, the person believes strange things about their personality, and they can often act in embarrassing or dangerous ways. Mania can be experienced at the same time as depression, in a mixed episode. Dysphoric mania is primarily agitated depression. This has caused speculation among doctors that mania and depression are independent axes on a bipolar spectrum, rather than opposites.
