Sarah Alagroobi explores notions of culture and identity of both Middle Eastern and Western contexts. Her practice mines collective experiences with works that portray an agile simplicity in expression of place, borders and a sense of belonging, carving out a place for personal contemplation. The process involves a primarily sculptural implementation and experiences as a kind of mechanical climax. The work is created with the perpetual layering of material that is then excavated into striated forms. The process of mark making, both digital and physical, are semiotic traces of the work’s narrative that transcend not only the history of the work but convey a kind of physical deliverance. The impulse to acquire meaning beyond the material, the process reflects a human cycle of creating and destroying, peeling back the strata of flattened paint that mimic typological sites, a deployment of materiality. It is an articulation of surface that is dense with information as a way to communicate the relationship between technology and humanity.
