I have a wide spectrum of interests, owing to my multi-disciplinary and transcultural background. I moved to the UK from Korea at the age of thirteen, and was exposed to the contrast of the two cultures. Before entering into the contemporary art world, I studied for a BA (Hons) in Fashion Management. I hold an MA in Global Arts from Goldsmiths’ College, University of London, where my main research was around geo-politics and protests. My curatorial engagement lies with curatorial responsibility: whether it is in relation to the art market or as a social agent.
Between 2014 and 2016, I immersed myself in the theoretical and practical aspects of curating as a student on the MA Curating Contemporary Art programme at the Royal College of Art. My curatorial methodology considers the process of research the most crucial part of a project, as demonstrated first-hand in my dissertation and at the Graduate Show in 2016.Â
In order to investigate the notion of post-coloniality in the context of curating, I wrote my dissertation, Farewell, Ghost: Curating Trauma in Post-colonial Conditions. This does not offer a how to manual for curating trauma as such, but is rather a curatorial research project within which I question curatorial strategies around mediating colonial trauma, specifically sexual slavery during the Pacific War. The dissertation emerged from my wider research into post-colonial conditions in current society, which has been my core interest for the past few years.
The role of the curator is not only to facilitate exhibitions and events, but also to influence the community. I am pursuing a curatorial career in environments, which recognises the importance for rigorous research into artists’ and curators’ practices.Â
