We Must Make Our Words Take Physical Shape or Perish

My research is often interchangeable with the work itself. A ‘story’ written by my mother remembers her on the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament’s 1963 march from Aldermaston to London. Placard slogans collected at the People’s Vote march, an email correspondence with Britain’s badge expert regarding the cultural relevance of bootleg badges, sit alongside a badge workshop, an animation of commands and exhortations, and a peace dove juxtaposed with a remembrance poppy in the form of a road sign.

  • Joseph Beuys declared 'everyone is an artist' and I use this as a springboard to underpin my current practice. By occupying space in which art and politics converge, I aim to find new models of shaping protest and change. My work examines the mechanics of protest art such as the slogans and statements found on placards and badges, and how the passive voice of such material takes physical form, starting with words and symbols and transforming into action.
