The Drop Of A Seed
Ruby Smith is an artist and designer who creates work inspired by social groups, fandoms and folk art. In her work she communicates contemporary stories through traditional craft practices.
Her final project, The Drop Of A Seed, developed from her interest in post war socialist groups such as the Kindred of the Kibbo Kift and The Woodcraft Folk. Fascinated by their progressive ethos, highlighting the importance of peace and community alongside their aesthetic and spirituality. She believes that craft is a tool for change, and through her work she aspires to open up discussions around current political topics such as climate change, social reform and Women's rights.
Ruby’s process is research-based, drawing interest from a wide range of sources from art history to contemporary pop culture. She sees no hierarchy, striving to elevate areas of culture that are undermined. Her work is multidisciplinary, the medium led by the concept.
Her collection uses the traditional latch hook rug making technique alongside knitting and screen printing.
