Rosie Gibbens is a performance and video artist. Her work explores issues of desire and power in relation to gender performativity and sexual politics. She does this through combining anthropomorphised everyday objects with bodies in absurd ways. Â These actions attempt to blur the line between amusing and unsettling the viewer.
She often appropriates gestures and poses from sources that present bodies as consumable spectacles, whether from the history of art, pornography, product demonstrations, stock photos or advertisements. This is partly in attempt to reclaim them, and partly to ridicule them.Â
She hopes to communicate bafflement in the face of externally prescribed rules about how to behave, as a socialised human, sexualised women and consumer.
