Bollocks, Rosa Allison 2018
Clay and a stick

My forms empty out cultural reference and act as a container for different surfaces. These surfaces react to each other when they touch. At the edges there is a friction between contrasting colour and texture so that each part oscillates in pictorial space.
My process involves improvisation and play- similar to an improvised performance or dance; the large scale of the paintings allows them to act as a stage in which actions and gestures take place. Raw, handmade processes such as painting and ceramics leave traces of imperfections and limitations of the body.
There is often a precariousness about the way things are held in space. Where things struggle under the weight of gravity it creates a feeling of fragility that relates to the vulnerability of the human body.
