Echoes & Recurrence

As digital technology continues to radically change the way we live, work and shop, function or program within the design of new buildings is becoming less and less important. Therefore, the project asks: how can we design space without resorting to functionalism?

It begins by establishing a set of universal proportions and systems of arrangement though precedent studies. These are then defined as a set of parameters, thorough dimensions and rules as well as physical models. It investigates fundamental elements of the formal qualities of architecture such as stacking. It does this through large tectonic models, then looks at ways this stacking or repetition can be disrupted.

The conditions are then translated into twin buildings, one urban and one rural. The repetition of identical form in two contexts creates a dialogue between the architectures as a way of exploring the spatial qualities.

The non-representational way the project is presented aims to take the observer as close to the object as possible, placing the viewer in the buildings. The observer sees patterns between the two buildings, these similarities are the spatial qualities translated from the studies.

    Specialism

  • I am interested in space that is not determined by functionalism. I have been exploring architectures that destroy the barriers between people and buildings that are not derived from program. My work aims to push the boundaries of buildings, by developing formal qualities that enrich the lives of the inhabitants.
