Inside a Machine
Humans will always push the body and mind to the extreme, to become more than we are. In the robotic age this may lead us to transhumanism. My project started with a question: What if I woke up inside a thinking machine? The suit I wear is more than a film prop—it is a critical tool for investigating the narrative possibilities of a cybernetic life, highlighting not only the limitations, but also the possibilities—the companionship, the ability to see the world anew, and the humour in it all.

Robert Marshall has a background in Fine Arts and Sports Science. His profession in the Leisure Industry has given him an interest in the body and mind with interests in Descartes dualism, embodiment (the way the body shapes the mind) and the body as a machine. He is also a practicing sculptor, originally working with materials such as stone and plaster before using a variety of materials in his fine arts practice that question the very core of what it now means to be a sculptor and his/her relationship to material and immaterial in the 21st century.
