Notes on Meteorites: A Collection of Literature and Ephemera Regarding Mysterious Falling Stones and Celestial Exhalations of the Earth

Notes on Meteorites is a collection of aspects, observations and ideas about meteorites. It is organised around a series of critical essays examining: historical background and scientific properties; cultural and economic value, and ethical considerations; connotations of disaster and apocalyptic imagery; and impact on human body and the capacity for sublime. A consistent editorial voice is maintained throughout these sections. To further explore the range of possibilities offered by the meteorite, the essays are punctuated with samples of creative writing. These five texts are biographies of specific meteorites, whether real, reimagined, or entirely fictionalised. In these texts, disparate voices are explored in an attempt to offer different understandings on the impact of meteorites.

Throughout Notes on Meteorites, I have combined original research, experience, and interviews with the rich history of artistic and literary depictions of astral phenomena, scientific accounts, eyewitness testimony, and oral tradition. The research includes: interviews ranging from extreme experience designer Nelly Ben Hayoun to Dr Matthias Bärmann, author, curator and part-time meteorite hunter; a personal trip to a meteor impact crater; and collaboration with artists, other writers and photographers for alternative perspectives on my interstellar souvenir.

It begins and ends with my meteorite, a 5g sample of iron meteorite from the Campo del Cielo fall in Argentina; each section spins off in its own direction but maintains a connection with my meteorite in some way. The resulting text is by no means exhaustive or complete, but rather an indication of the depths contained within my subject.

MA Critical Writing in Art & Design, 2014

  • Writer and illustrator, with a background in Modern British and Contemporary art and curating. I have a practical understanding of exhibition management and design, which I use as a foundation for writing, research and reviews. In my writing, I like to explore history and cultural through objects, using one item, incident, or event to extrapolate a wider understanding or network of ideas. Writing can be used to describe, illuminate or obscure; I experiment with all of these elements in both my visual and written practice. Working in sound and radio production are also interests which I've explored in my coursework and in my final project. Archive research is a task I particularly enjoy, and I have practical experience managing artists' archives for analysis, valuation, and further research. This type of research – particularly regarding artist and gallery archives – is something I hope to continue in the future.

While my background is in art and design, my attention often strays towards science, technology and science fiction. I investigated Canadian, feminist, fanzine-critic Susan Joan Wood for the project Archaeologies of Criticism; discussed the change from physical financial trading sites to online platforms in the publication Ends Meet: Essays on Exchange (2014); while my final project traces the history and cultural impact of the meteorite.
