Sand to Glass

Glass is liquid sand. Rocks break down into pebbles through changes in temperature and pressure, pebbles decompose into sand and sand can be transformed into glass through the reverse process. Sand melts into liquid form at 1,575 °C.

It is the raw material and the glass itself.

“Sand to Glass” is a material and process research project demonstrated in two collections. The material and process results in different visual and textural qualities. Sand also serves as a gripping function and a way of reconnecting subjects with nature through touch.

The first collection is a set of three vases and a bowl as craft objects in advanced glass techniques.

The second collection is a bowl, a carafe, a tall and a short cup as products utilizing the gripping feature of sand.

  • I am an Istanbul born industrial designer based in London. My work focuses on memory, intangible cultural heritage and craft practices. I seek ways of translating cultural nuances into tangible objects through exploring processes and materials.

Artisans in Istanbul (http://istanbulzanaatkarlari.com/), is a previous research project, which aims to locate and document local artisans to find the best way to establish a community platform for artisans and designers.

My dissertation, 'Olfactive Objects' is about recording and playing back smell. Smell has a strong trigger for emotions and memories, which links back to her previous interests. My current work involves designing, creating processes and products for crafts and olfaction.
