Rachel Wright

Rachel’s practice explores narrative predominantly through drawing and painting. At the RCA, she has developed a project focused on domestic interiors exploring the way in which our experience of memory and home can fluctuate between emptiness and nostalgia and conjure a sense of the uncanny. The series, created using pencil, charcoal and oil paint on linseed oil paper, forms vignettes of fictional suburban spaces. The non-linear structure of the series and mysterious fragments contained within singular images enable the viewer to contribute to the construction and interpretation of the narrative. An interplay is created between the banal and the foreboding, between a fantasy of the luxurious, exotic and aspirational and the everyday reality. The images are intended to evoke a particular atmosphere and encourage an emotional response from the viewer, juxtaposing small moments of personal significance with an over-arching sense of impermanence.
