The Second Skin

“The Second Skin”is a new conception for the garment design based on the environmental concerns. In the design, different types of waste materials would be used as the raw materials to make garments. The project main includes three sections: the texture, the transforming process and the garment silhouettes. In the experiment, the thin and transparent waste plastic films are chosen as the main materials for the waste collection and English traditional smocking machine is used to create pleats on the plastic films for the collection purpose from a new prospective. Later, the plastic films are challenged to be dyed with Indigo and been quilted to the garments finally. “The Second Skin” gives a new explanation to the skin, including the physical human skin, the garments skin and the invisible "The Body Cover" skin.
